Suleiman E. Alazzabi leads Jumhouria Bank, the largest financial institution in Libya and a pillar of the country’s banking system. Appointed General Manager by the Central Bank of Libya in 2025, he assumed leadership of a bank whose scale and reach make it central to the modernisation of Libyan finance, and to the country’s reconnection with the international banking system.
Alazzabi’s early tenure has been defined by a drive toward modernisation. Under his leadership, Jumhouria Bank became the first Libyan bank to complete a full transition to the SWIFT-MX ISO 20022 messaging standard, a technical milestone that enables faster and more secure international transfers, reduces operational errors and strengthens the bank’s integration with global financial networks. The achievement reflects a broader strategic vision for digital transformation, and signals the bank’s intent to meet the compliance and interoperability standards expected by international correspondent banks.
That work carries particular weight in Libya, where rebuilding the resilience and international credibility of the financial sector is a national priority. Recognised in 2026 among Africa’s leading finance figures, Alazzabi occupies a pivotal role: steering the country’s biggest bank through a period of technological renewal and reintegration with the wider world of global finance after years of turbulence and isolation.
