Daniel Mminele has spent his career at the intersection of markets and public policy, and today he chairs one of South Africa’s most storied financial institutions. Appointed Chairman of Nedbank Group in June 2023, he brings a rare breadth of experience spanning central banking, commercial banking and the global climate-finance agenda.
His grounding came at the South African Reserve Bank, where he served two five-year terms as Deputy Governor, sitting at the centre of the country’s monetary machinery (the Monetary Policy Committee, the Financial Stability Committee) with responsibility for financial markets and international economic relations. His path there was itself international: before joining the central bank in 1999, he spent more than a decade in corporate credit, project and structured finance at African Merchant Bank, Commerzbank and WestLB in Britain and Germany. He later crossed into commercial banking at the highest level, as Chief Executive of Absa Group, before chairing Alexander Forbes.
His climate work has lately drawn international attention. In 2022 Mminele led South Africa’s Presidential Climate Finance Task Team, coordinating the landmark Just Energy Transition Partnership and the investment plan launched at COP27, one of the developing world’s most ambitious efforts to finance a move away from coal. At Nedbank he oversees a group balancing profitability and sustainability, and represents a generation of African bankers equally at home in a Johannesburg boardroom and an international negotiating room.
