Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama took office as Governor of the Bank of Ghana in early 2025, returning to lead an institution he has served, in one capacity or another, for much of his professional life. His appointment placed a seasoned insider at the controls of monetary policy at a critical juncture, as Ghana works to restore stability after a period of fiscal and currency strain.
Asiama is a central banker to his core. Over more than two decades at the Bank of Ghana he has held senior positions across research, banking supervision and monetary policy, and served as Second Deputy Governor between 2016 and 2018. As a long-standing member of the Monetary Policy Committee, he has been intimately involved in decisions on interest rates and inflation, the levers he now commands as Governor.
His tenure has centred on the disciplines of stability: credible monetary policy, enforcement of foreign-exchange regulations, and financial-sector reforms to strengthen the resilience of Ghana’s banks. He has been notably candid about the importance of clear economic communication, treating engagement with the public and media as a tool of sound policy. An economist of strong academic standing, he holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton. Now serving as both Governor and Chairman of the Board, Asiama embodies the institutional memory and quiet authority the moment demands, charged with rebuilding confidence in one of West Africa’s most closely watched economies.
