Dr Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor took office as Governor of the Bank of Mauritius in September 2025, returning home to lead the central bank of one of Africa’s most sophisticated financial centres after a distinguished international career. Her appointment brought to the governorship a scholar-practitioner of rare depth, steeped in the macroeconomic frameworks that underpin financial and economic stability.
Her association with the Bank of Mauritius began more than two decades ago, when she joined as a research officer in 2002. In 2009 she became the first Mauritian accepted into the International Monetary Fund’s prestigious Economist Program, the start of more than sixteen years at the Fund. As part of the core team behind the IMF’s flagship Fiscal Monitor, she contributed to influential work on fiscal sustainability and inclusive growth, with research published in peer-reviewed journals. She also served as Resident Advisor on macroeconomic and financial policies at the IMF’s Africa Training Institute, working closely with policymakers across developing economies.
Her academic record is exceptional: a recipient of the State of Mauritius Scholarship, she holds a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University and both a Master’s and a DPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford. As Governor, she safeguards the stability of a jurisdiction that serves as a gateway for investment into Africa and beyond, bringing to Port Louis the credibility of an economist who has advised the world, now applied in service of her own country’s future.
